Pictures from Tomorrowland 2011

On Thursday ( 21st July 2011 ) the fairytale kicked of in Boom with the arrival of 30.000 DreamVille guests. They received a warm welcome with a “National Holiday” barbecue and a first big party with a unbelievable surprise act of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.  Even the rain couldn’t wash away the party-spirit. The first day was a big success with 60.000 visitors, 14 stages, good weather and an extremely enjoyable atmosphere until the last notes of the Swedish House Mafia. Saturday, again 60.000 revelers came to witness an unforgettable day with performances from world-famous artists such as Martin Solveig, Tiesto, Sven Väth and the Belgian artists Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Netsky and FormaT. 50 different nationalities enjoyed a special “Belgian” treatment in the VIP.   On Sunday the weather was bright and the sun was shining.  60.000 visitors on this last festivalday! Cherry on the cake for this 2011 edition is once again the “fuck me I’m famousDavid Guetta

Tomorrowland History (since 2005)
Tomorrowland is not just a music festival. It is a totally unique, balanced and artistic concept set in the most stunning area of natural beauty. ID&T pay the utmost attention to detail towards all areas of production, and all of these little details and extras - like the beautiful decorations, overwhelming number of world-class acts, creative and colorful animations, cozy cocktail bars, beaches, fireworks and much much more – make Tomorrowland truly incomparable to any other festival experience.

Facts & Figures:
Visitors = 60.000/day – Camping = 30.000
Visitors = 50 different nationalities, but we still keep 20% foreigners and 80 % Belgians. We do it by controlling our sales.
Edition = 7
Stages = 14/day
Dj’s = total 469 dj’s in total!  (but then we count for 2 many Dj’s = 2 persons, and for Swedish House Mafia = 3) If we talk in line up names = little bit more than 300.
Biggest stage = mainstage 126 meter long, 22 meter high.
Crew working during festival = 3000
Building up = 3 weeks. Building of = 1 week

And here are the stunning pictures from that magical weekend in Belgium:-

Goldfish - Soundtracks & Comebacks ( Fedde Le Grand remix )

Official press release :-

Thousands of you have been begging for the identity of that track from Fedde le Grand’s recent Takeover Tour videos on FLG TV.

Well the raging debate can finally come to a stop as we exclusively reveal it to be Fedde’s massive remix of Soundtracks & Comebacks by hot young South African duo and Blue Marlin residents Goldfish. Their show-stopping style – featuring explosive live instrumentation alongside dynamic, funk-fuelled mixes – caught the eye of Fedde as far back as 2008.

And the official video to the remix should certainly catch the eyes of music fans around the world. Taking a slightly psychedelic trip with a DJing goldfish, a hotly pursuant cat, boogying underwater sea life and with a random evolutionary twist thrown in for good measure, this musical animation is definitely one of the most unusual and entertaining videos we’ve ever seen from Fedde :

With Soundtracks & Comebacks, the Dutchman once again proves to be an unstoppable one-man hit factory as he takes the pair’s sizzling summertime saxophones, funked-up organ chords and sleazy vocal line and puts it through the le Grand remix machine, spitting out a huge new cut on the other side.

Whether it’s in the heat of Space Ibiza or at one of the countless events Fedde is taking over across the next couple of jam-packed months, Soundtracks & Comebacks (Fedde le Grand Remix) is guaranteed to have clubbers around the world reaching for those peaktime lasers.

Exclusive interview with The House Moguls

Gus Calderone & Bill Basil (Billy the kid) are collectively known to us as The House Moguls. Hailing from Chicago, the home of House music, this dynamic duo have remixed some of the greatest dance choons of our time such as Rendez-Vu, Groovejet & One more time which earned an accolade from MSTRKRFT as being "the best Daft Punk remix of all time"!
The guys have kindly offered a free download from Soundcloud
entitled 'House Nation'. If you like your beats big, chunky & dirty then this one is for you! Check it out here:-

The House Moguls "House Nation" by thehousemoguls

    • Hi guys, thank you very much for agreeing to this interview. I would to start by asking you individually what was your first memory of music, and how did it make you feel?
Bill Basil: I remember being around a lot of music as a kid. There was always music playing in my house, a lot of Motown. It made me wanna be a musician & learn how those amazing songs were created.
Gus Calderone: Growing up there was always music in my house, both my father and mother are really into music and both played instruments.  But Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album is what did it for me.
    • Who was a major influence to you musically when you were growing up, & at what age did you both realise that music was going to be your career?
Bill Basil:  I've always loved legitimate artists. Guys like Stevie Wonder, Prince, people who really put emotion and soul into their work and give it their everything. When you listen to an artist like that you know exactly what they were trying to express at that moment of their life. I knew at a very young age my career would involve music.
Gus Calderone:  I can't really say one artist really influenced me. We were able to grow up in such an amazing era of artists, some of the greatest of all time. I just really cant pin point one person. I've always known I would be involved in music in some way or form.
    • You have remixed some of the best dance tracks such as Daft Punk's 'One more time' & Basement Jaxx's 'Rendez-Vu'. How do you both decide which tracks to edit to your own style? And has there been one particular track that you have thought ' Wow this is gonna be shit hot!!'? ;)
THM: A lot of the projects we work on are really spare of the moment. We work daily in the studio either on our radio shows or production work and constantly listening to music really does help. We dig up old jems a lot and wonder why up & comer Djs aren't playing them? If we can remix them and help them resurface to a new generation of listeners its an amazing feeling for us. The Daft Punk Remix we produced in 2007 is still getting major spins from the worlds biggest Djs and that was something we did just for fun, to play at our own shows. Before we knew it every bedroom to superstar Dj was charting it and labels were hitting us up constantly for that type of remix. It was overwhelming to have that kind of exposure really over night. Every time we finish a project we're always very proud and constantly thinking this is something special or this is a really hot tune. We really love what we do & being that passionate about your work makes you really fall in love with every song you make.
    • How does it feel when a high profile Deejay plays your remix in a club & it gets a massive reaction from the crowd?
THM: Seeing Djs playing our music and seeing the crowd reactions is a lot of the reason why we chose to do this job. We're lucky enough that so many Djs have sent us videos from festivals all over the world just to show us the responses that our music gets in other countries. Its extremely humbling but also a very driving. Seeing 100,000 people going crazy to one of our songs really puts us in the mood to keep on producing more. We're both extremely creative in our own rights but seeing the people loving the music really keeps us motivated.
    • Your monthly podcast 'The Show' is superb! It must be a great way to share your music with your fans & you promote it on your social network sites such as Facebook & Twitter, so how important are these outlets as a way of reaching your fans? And how important is it to you to get feedback from them?
THM: Thank you so much! The Show is something we started and never expected it to blow up as fast and as big as it has. We really are blessed with some amazing fans. In order to reach these fans we utilize our social media outlets as much as possible and invite the fans to contact us as much as they can. Social media sites have made it possible for us to connect with our fans consistently and for them to feel like they are part of The House Moguls experience. They can sign on at anytime and see what were up to or what country were in. Its a way for us to take everyone on the road or everyone into the studio and for them to experience almost as much as we do.
    • And finally would you both give a piece of advice that may help someone who wanted to start a career in music on their own / as a duo?
Bill Basil:  I would say that being involved at a young age is good. Start taking instrument lessons or vocal lessons. Whatever it is that your interested in. Whatever knowledge you can have will always help. The music business has a lot more to it then just making music. Be well rounded and know your roots! Stay humble no matter how quickly you rise in the business. Stay clear of shitty managers and shitty promoters. Be involved with quality people who want to produce quality results.
Gus Calderone:  On top of what Billy said, the music industry is constantly changing to the consumer. You must be willing to adapt, grow, and evolve as an artist. If you plan to get into this for instant fame, money, or to get laid, don't do it, get involved for the love of music and the opportunity to create something. For every 100 people who do it there might be 1 that actually have a successful career. Be prepared for the long haul. For most people there is no such thing as over night success. I can also say if you are planning on being a duo, remember friendship comes first. Billy and I were friends before this, we are more like family, our families are close. Billy and I have been hanging around for so long a lot we know what each other is thinking before it happens, which helps out either in the studio or when were playing a show live. There will be some hard times, where you might argue or not get a long, just understand that will pass.

Editors note: Thank you so much guys for answering my questions, some really great answers there =) The new mix is fantastic! Good luck with all your future projects, we look forward to hearing more lil gems from you.

    Exclusive interview with D.Ramirez

Dean Marriot born in Sheffield, UK is best known to us as House/Minimalist/Techno Deejay/Producer D.Ramirez.
With 5 top 20 hits under his belt, an appearance on Top of the Pops, the creation of his own record label Slave Recordings, Ramirez has also earned himself an Ivor Novello Award nomination for his remix of Bodyrox's smash hit Yeah Yeah.
Performing under names such as Finger fest, Cordial & most famously as The Lisa Marie Experience, his partnership with Neil Hynde, D.Ramirez is a man of many talents & a well respected & accomplished artist in his own right.
His latest release from Tool Room Records 'D.Ramirez & Friends' is out NOW!

    • Thank you Dean for taking time to answer these questions. Can you tell us about your first experience with music, & did you know from then that you wanted to make a career out of it?
DR: While I was at school I started to play the drums, I was also quite a decent singer so I started my own band with a few of my mates doing cover versions. I then joined a metal band where I was the frontman but we didn't get anywhere. I then joined a band with Elliot Kennedy who went on to write and produce most of the Spice Girls first album. He's now writing and producing for everyone. My love of house music came about in the 80's when I used to go and listen to Graeme Park at the Steamer in Sheffield, that was 1988. It was then that I started to produce house and my first track was released in 1991. I was called Cordial back then and the track was titled 'Candlelight'. A friend of mine lent me the money to cut 500 white labels and I literally had to hand deliver them to the record stores myself. I also hand delivered promo copies to the DJ's personally following them around (that's how it was back then) it was hard work but it paid off when I was spotted by Pete Tong doing a live PA in Venus nightclub Nottingham and he signed me to his FFRR label. I always knew that I would have a career in music, it was never a question for me and I never thought it would be any different.
    • Your style over the years has varied, epecially releasing tracks under your various pseudonyms such as The Lisa Marie Experience & Finger fest. Where does your inspiration for these & your solo projects come from?
DR: I love all types of music so I just use my influences and name my projects accordingly. The Lisa Marie Experience for instance was born from the fact we sampled Michael Jackson back in 1993 when he had just married Lisa Marie Presley. Finger fest Inc came about as a collaboration between me and Barry Gilbey. I was Dino 'Fingers' Ramirez and Barry happened to look like Uncle Fester one day wearing a suit from a certain angle - you can work out the rest.
    • What is your favourite thing about touring? And what is your favourite thing about coming home?
DR: I used to hate touring because it dragged me away from the studio and I resented it. Now it's totally different and I love it. In fact there's been a roll reversal for me and I consider myself more of a DJ than a producer these days. I'm also single right now and it's so much easier when you don't have the guilt of leaving somebody behind for months on end. I love coming home so I can get back into my studio as it's in my house. I have so many ideas when I get back so I get straight in there to lay them down.
    • You work quite a lot with Mark Knight. How well do you think you compliment each other, and which other British DJs do you admire?
DR: I'm more of the tekkie guy in the studio whereas Mark is good with the ideas and looking at the whole picture so we compliment each other in that respect. I'm good at synthesising sounds, he's good at putting them into the arrangement that's a great team as we both have our strengths. Other British DJ's I admire are guys like Nic Fanciulli, Carl Cox, Justin Robertson, James Zabiela.
    • What do you feel about the cross over between House music, R&B/Hiphop and Trance nowadays? And in what kind of way does it affect you as an artist?
DR: In a few words - I hate it! But not to say I wouldn't produce something like that for the money.
    • I have a couple of questions from Dave from Merseyside ① When you will be playing in Liverpool/Manchester next? ② On FB/Twitter you say you use the train alot. Do you drive and if so, what type of car do you have?
DR: Don't know when I'm back in Liverpool to be honest. I usually play at the G Bar but I've not been there for a while now. And yes, I take the train a lot, not because I drive a shit car, more because I can get work done on the train and it's a bit less stressful than driving. And just because you asked I drive a BMW Z4 Coupe (Hard Top) it's the M4 version and it's a beast so there.
    • And lastly what advise would you give to someone who wanted to start out as a deejay/producer?
DR: The best advise I can give is this - just stick at it and when it feels like you might not be getting anywhere, keep going. Always believe in yourself, never doubt your ability and just know in your heart that one day it's going to happen. The power of positive thought is your best ally so use it to your advantage.

Editors note : Thank you so much Dean for taking the time to do this interview, its been an absolute pleasure =) I wish you all the best in everything you do, & hope you do make your way up to Liverpool one day again soon...we miss you up here ( or should that be down here lol!)

    Exclusive interview with Mark Doyle

Founder of one of the UK's biggest dance record labels Hed Kandi, Mark Doyle is a UK based nightclub DJ & headliner of his club event parties Fierce Angels, which holds events around the globe.
Mark also hosts a radio show on Jazz FM every week, which is broadcast in over 12 countries worldwide. This year Fierce Angels will be celebrating 5 successful years in the business & their popularity just keeps on growing & growing.

Here I speak to Mark about Hed Kandi, Fierce Angels & generally just pick his brains ;)

    • You founded one of the UKs biggest dance labels Hed Kandi back in 1999. Where did your inspiration for that idea come from & did you feel there was a gap in the market at that time?
MD: The inspiration came pure and simple from the fact that I took a look around and being a clubber / DJ / music lover from the mid eighties I just didn’t think there were any CD’s that really were being produced and marketed for a slightly older target audience. In the late 90’s there were simply tons of “dance” compilations put together by big name DJ’s, they all featured many of the same tracks and were fairly interchangeable. My inspiration was the compilations I used to buy in the eighties likes Streetsounds & Mastercuts. They were great compilations that featured full 12” mixes and weren’t driven by having big commercial hits on them.
So the idea for a great quality driven compilation series that was collectable and featured great music pure and simple seemed a bit of a no brainer !
    • Why did you feel it was time to pass on the reins of Hed Kandi & start a new project?
MD: Part of what made Hed Kandi great was that I was pretty much left alone to do my own thing whether is seemed like a sound business decision at the time or not. This was because Hed Kandi was owned by the company I worked for “Jazz FM.” As a Jazz radio station the directors of the company pretty much left me to my own devices and as long as I didn’t lose loads of money I was allowed to take the company in the direction I wanted. Unfortunately as businesses get bigger and more successful you come under more pressure and scrutiny to keep the money coming in. While Jazz FM was a small radio station and run by it’s original directors this was fairly easy but when it was taken over by The Guardian Media Group things changed quite drastically. Quite simply towards the end we were becoming more and more successful but it was a daily battle to keep the business where I thought it should be.
Eventually I decided that my own personal happiness was more important than the paycheck ..and moved on.

    • I'm a big old skool fan! How do you think the clubscene & dance music has changed since the 90s? And do you feel it's for the better?
MD: There’s always the argument that nothing was ever as good as it was in the old days ... I say it, my parents say it and no doubt in 10 years times the clubbers of today will say it. The only constant in life is things move on and change. You can spend the whole of your life looking over your shoulder and wishing for the old days or try and do something about it now.. The club scene is an awful lot harder than it used to be and the current state of the economy doesn’t help much .. But then the flipside to that is there is a huge worldwide clubbing market to experience. In terms of music styles change and certain things have their moment in the spotlight but great true soulful house music is always there..and it’s great labels like Fierce, Defected, Z Record and Strictly (to name a few) that keep that flame burning. The internet has definitely opened up the market to hearing lots more music it’s just a shame people feel the need to steal it rather than pay for other peoples hard work.
    • Do you have a favourite club either here in the UK or anywhere else in the world that you love to play at & feel really at home?
MD: There are so many of them ..we are incredibly lucky to work with some amazing venues off the top of my head I would say The Wright Venue in Dublin, Barcelona Ultra Lounge in Vancouver, Es Vive in Ibiza, Stereolab in Singapore.
    • Fierce Angels has been a great success, especially in the UK & Ibiza, but also other parts of the world too! What do your nights bring to the dancefloor that other club events may not?
MD: A sense of fun and a bloody good time. We don’t for one minute think we are a super cool brand and we don’t rely on superstar DJ’s so Fierce Angel is all about the atmosphere and the music and providing an amazing night.
    • Is there a particular DJ who has inspired you over the years & is there anyone recently that has caught your attention?
MD: DJ’s that inspire me include Joey Negro, Erick Morillo, Simon Dunmore, Masters At Work, Frankie Knuckles and the list goes on and on .... More recently our newest residents are certainly leading the way with great music and they include Verity Mayes, Martin Wright and Marc Rowell.
    • If I say some words that you can only reply back with one word, how would you answer these? :-
    • Ibiza - HOME
    • MusicYES!
    • Mark Doyle - WORKAHOLIC
    • DJCONDUCTOR
    • BassESSENTIAL
    • DancingCOMPULSORY
    • Glow sticksMUSEUM
    • Old skoolHISTORY
    • And lastly could you share a piece of your knowledge to best advise someone who wanted to start a career as a DJ/Producer?
MD: Don’t expect to fall into a gig because you’ve got 20 great records from Beatport and can use Serato effortlessly. Technical skill is great but experience and a wide taste in music is essential in making a good DJ a great DJ is about working your backside off and putting yourself out there.

Editors note: Thank you very much Mark for taking the time to share your vast knowledge with us, we wish you well in all that you do =)
