AFROJACK INVITES STEVE AOKI FOR 'JACKED'!
So far, 2011 has been a real rollercoaster ride for Afrojack. Not only did he win a Grammy and two IDMA’s, but Afrojack also continues to travel the globe to play at the world’s most renowned clubs and festivals. On the 16th of July, he will leave all the international dance floors behind for a special night in his homeland’s capital, Amsterdam. Afrojack will present you ‘Jacked’! A brand new event, which will premier in one of Amsterdam’s hottest nightclubs, AIR. Afrojack will not come to AIR alone, for this unique occasion he will bring some of his long-time DJ-friends including none other than Steve Aoki!

Afrojack has already played alongside Steve Aoki at the Dim Jack party in Las Vegas and at the Dim Mak party during this year’s Miami Music Week, so with Aoki added to the line-up we can expect some pure dance floor mayhem for ‘Jacked’.
Other long-time DJ friends who will take place behind the decks at ‘Jacked’ are Apster and Bobby Burns, who have each released some outstanding productions on Wall Recordings, Afrojack’s own record label. R3hab, one of the most in demand remixers of the moment and co-producer of ‘Prutataaa’, will finish the first edition of ‘Jacked’ with his electro fireworks. The host of the evening, Zawdi MC, completes the line-up for what could be one of Amsterdam’s biggest club events this summer. From the moment the doors of AIR open for ‘Jacked’, till the next morning, Afrojack and his guests will treat the crowd to an electrifying night.

Hanging with the band - A Masterfly exclusive

OK so they are not Deejays, but they are musicians, & very talented ones at that! Masterfly are a four piece band from Merseyside that formed back in the Summer of 2008. Starting out as 'The Smoking Jokers' after band members, & school friends, Tom Martin, Louis Thomas & Ste Williams had just watched the latest Batman installment 'The Dark Knight'.
The fourth member, Jan Taylor, was quickly recruited upon the guys hearing his impressive guitar skills. Soon after the name Masterfly emerged after Tom misread the word 'Masterly' in the dictionary & that's the day that Masterfly was born.
After some unsuccessful gigs at Vale Park, New Brighton the band used this to their advantage by practising day & night to improve, & it was a gig at The Caldy School in 2010 that they had their skill confirmed.
In the Autumn of 2010 the guys did two gigs at the Zanzibar club in Liverpool, & in November they won The Caldy 2010 Battle of the Bands, beating such bands as The Escaldas, who had already released records under labels.
Since then the band have written an EP, headlined at The O2 Academy, played most major Merseyside venues & will be playing The Picket on 23rd July.
So who have been Masterfly's musical influences? How do they feel about their fans loyalty? And where do they see themselves in 5 years time? Well here I have a little chat with the band & find out all those things & more:-

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to talk about Masterfly with us.
  • Who would you say has been your biggest influence musically, & do you think they may have attributed to shaping your style & sound?
MF: This is a difficult question because all four of us have our own unique taste, and I think that contributes to making our music so unique. However, all four of us absolutely adore the Red Hot Chili Peppers, their raw energy, their ability to adapt within genres and their performance style. In terms of our writing, I can't really say that Chilis have had a massive influence for the pure reason they're so different to most rock bands and their sound is so recognisable, but in terms of live performance and approach to gigging, we always look to Chilis as the pinacle of live rock music. Musically? Again, a difficult part to answer. I suppose you can hear elements of bands such as The Killers and Rage Against the Machine, but also more experimental bands such as Muse and Radiohead.
  • How would you best describe your style & sound?
MF: The word that springs to mind in terms of style is definitely energy. We have a strong ethos that an energetic performance will result in an energetic crowd and sound. Jan is very good at playing fast solos and his feeling portrayed when he plays is definitely energetic, and the sharp basslines of Louis add to our unique energetic edginess. I, as the frontman (Tom) will always give 100% as a performer and try to capture the imaginiation and spirit of every single person in a particular room. It's not always easy, but people have testified that it's always memorable. Ste will often play impressive fills on the drums, so I would definitely describe the band's sound and style as energetic. Sort of like a 70's punk band drinking Relentless. Without  the punk
  • What's the secret to working harmoniously as a four piece band?
MF: You tell us! There's no great secret really, we're just best friends outside the band as well as in. Only with the utmost trust we have in each other can we have the confidence to constructively criticise each other's contribution and we never let a disagreement get personal. I know it sounds like a very non-rock n' roll cliche, but we're like family and respect each other like brothers. One moment we can be arguing over a cover idea, and the next we'll be throwing crisps at each other. It's briliant.
  • As well as doing covers you write your own material. Does one particular person have more of an input or do you all contribute equally?
MF: We do have a sort of 'structure' in place when it comes to writing. I (Tom) will either write lyrics at home and Jan will come up with a progression and/or riff for Louis and Ste to work around, or Jan will come up with a riff or progression and myself, Louis and Ste will work around it. Ste always admits he has the easiest job - but he has the unique position of being able to view our work from the outside and offer an independent opinion. As of late, however, we have began to write much more as a unit. We're hoping to write with a more definite theme in the future.
  • You have a loyal fan base that has followed you on each of your gigs. What does their loyalty mean to you as a band?
MF: It means absolutely everything. We're not just saying that to suck up to them, we mean it from the bottom of our hearts. They have no compulsion to follow us around, but they supported us at the beginning and they support us now. Without them, Masterfly would not exist, simple as. Seeing familiar faces in crowds will always spur us on as a band because we want to please them and as a result, we'll play better. Also, they act as an important catalyst for the rest of the audience to jump up and down and go a bit wild for half an hour or so!

  • Where is the best place for people to follow you to keep up-to-date about future gig dates?
MF: Yeah, easy, just go over to facebook.com/masterflyofficial and click on like for gig info! We post everything on there! Also, youtube.com/MasterflyOfficial carries some old demos, but we're hoping to record some at better quality this year.
  • OK we are going to fast forward five years now...what would your aspirations for that time scale be for Masterfly?
MF: Ooh the magic question! We always discuss this and can never agree to be honest. Ideally, we'd like to be the biggest band in the world, but that's much much easier said than done! I don't know really. Is touring the UK by the time we're 21 too much to ask for? It'd be nice to support a band we all look up to, such as Biffy Clyro or Chilis, and it'd be nice to have an album out that had achieved some success. I think it's possible, we just need to keep playing gigs and perhaps most importantly; keep writing!

OK how many of you admit to playing the same song over & over again?! Well I do it...can't help it! Some songs just demand replay coz of the genius production that has gone into making them! Whether they are originals, or a remix where someone has put their own stamp on it ( prime example Binary Finary 1998 ( Matt Darey remix ) ), I lurrrve these choooons!

This one has got me BIG TIME!! May have worn out the MP3 actually lol! Big up to Tom Buster for this AMAZING remix of an already AMAZING song......

This next one is by, in my opinion, the best DJ/Producer in the world ( OK I'm biased! So fkin sue me ;PP ) Fedde Le Grand has been an unstoppable force this year with hit after hit, but this latest track has got me very excited......

I am just gonna steer away from the Dutchies for a moment ( coz there's still a few to come! ) and introduce you to 3 young talents from Down Under : Chris Sterges, Mitch Thomas & Jeremy Bunawan, collectively known as S.M.J, who have (unofficially) remixed this lil beauty.......

OK back to those Dutchies, who seem to be taking over the world! This superb remix is from my lovely friend Johnny Deekay.......

My latest interviewee R3hab has just remixed another favourite song of mine by mamma monster Lady Gaga........

And lastly, but by no means leastly, a true gentleman & all round nice guy ( oh & did I mention a fkin amazing DJ/Producer!) Laidback Luke here in collab with Lady Bee......

          Exclusive interview with R3hab

Fadil El Ghoul, born 2nd April 1986, is a Tech House/Minimal DJ/Producer from Breda, NL & is better known to the music world as Deejay R3hab.
Working closely along side fellow Dutch Deejays : Addy van der Zwan, Afrojack & Ferruccio Salvo & studio partner Hardwell, R3hab has built up quite a reputation for himself with superb remixes, & his own productions such as the massive dance hit Mrkrstft, & most recently The Bottle song, released on Spinnin' Records in April.
R3hab also recently remixed Lady Gaga's massive hit Judas (R3HAB Remix) which I think is AMAZING!!

          • I would like to start off by saying thank you very much R3hab, I really appreciate you taking the time to do this interview & giving us an insight into your life as a deejay. Do you remember what age you were when you made your first connection with music, & did you realise then that this would be your focus for the years to come?
R3: I always had a great connection with music but around the age of 16 I really wanted to be a DJ. After I finished my college degree I was fully focusing on producing & DJing & I think the last 2 years went well.
          • Where did the idea of your stage name come from?
R3: The name came from brainstorming with friends, after a couple of years I changed the 'E' for a '3' because i thought it would look cooler.
          • The Netherlands is a breeding ground for amazing talents such as Afrojack, Laidback Luke, Fedde Le Grand etc. Why do you think this is & do you feel proud of these acheivements from your country?
R3: I think because the Dutch crowd demands a certain quality & the competition is very healthy, I am very proud about all the Dutch DJs like Tiësto, Afrojack, Fedde Le Grand, Sander van Doorn etc.

          • Do you ever get nervous before going out to do a performance, & if so would that be to a larger audience or a more smaller, intimate one?
R3: I got nervous at Dance Tour Breda when I played to 30.000 people ( see picture ) but I still get shy before audiences whether it is smaller or bigger.
          • Besides EDM, what kind of music do you enjoy listening to? And what artist(s) over the years have given you the most inspiration?
R3: I like all sorts of music at the moment. I am listening to Wiz Khalifa's new album but I also like rock, dance, alternative...my inspiration comes from everywhere.
          • And lastly as a closing thought, could you give one piece of advice that would help someone who wanted to start a career in music?
R3: Practice, practice, practice and PRACTICE!! Sometimes people would like the easy way, it takes a lot of hard work to get to a certain level.

Editors note : Thank you so much R3hab for this interview & your great words of wisdom. Good luck in all that you do & we cannot wait to hear more superb music from you =)

          Introducing....Adam Shaw

"Im 21 from Leeds, and I'm a purely self taught producer.
Inspired by Deadmau5, love Chase and Status / Tinie Tempah / Labrinth /& even Jessie J. I can relate to any genre, I have great respect for many different styles, this is because I understand how much work and effort has gone into the track rather than judging it by the genre.
Been producing for about a year now, started with Propellerheads reason then switched to using Logic Pro 9 a couple of months back.
YouTube was a great help with the tutorials other producers posted up, & I would love my own record label some day.
I have just started my own group on SoundCloud, the reason for this was when I first started uploading my tracks, I didn't get feedback but now I do now. So I've made a group trying to attract many producers/djs to join and give their opinions on tracks, aswell as giving them the chance to post their tracks in the group for feedback, no matter what the genre . 100% Feedback All Genres
