Cal Johnstone (Callum Johnstone) – Born in Bolton 1987, Manchester, has always had a thriving passion for music since an early age.
It started with happy hardcore and drum n bass, as soon as he got passed a helter skelter tape he was immediately hooked. He particularly took a liking to DJ Hype and Nicky Blackmarket due to the simplicity of the records played he adds – “simple tracks with a bumpy beats and a catchy basslines always get my attention”. Callum was also a big fan of uk garage and bassline these genres have had an influence on his productions and his sets to date
Around 4 years ago Cal was then introduced to underground house music by a friend in Manchester, after attending Sankys and listening to sets by Magda, Sebestian Ledger and Umek to name a few he instantly fell in love with this style of house
Tech House,Techno and Deep House are the styles Cal plays and enjoys the most.
He then decided he wanted to take his djing from making CD’s for pals up to the next stage and start playing clubs and bars, making more genre specific demos and sending them around in the hope that a promoter would listen
After sending his mixes out every month it payed off when Daniel Fisher of Preston listened to one, he landed his first residency with Funk’D Up.
This was a perfect opportunity to fine tweak his skills and experiment with crowd reactions

As well as an aspiring DJ Cal also does a lot of Producing – his first release is all set for the 26.06.12 on Quadraphonic Records which has had early support from Brandon Block, Peter Gelderblom, Edy Ramsas, Ki Creighton, Niki Belucci, Frisco Taibo, Peter McGill, Sergio Matina to name a few, it can be downloaded from Beatport.
“Complaints”entered the top 100 on trackitdowns tech-house charts reaching number 65
Cal’s second track “Aint No Loving – Feat Patrica” is all set and forthcoming on Bridge The Gap Records – this track gained attention from the dons of house Defected Records!
